Jacket pipe - Flange connection

Hello,

I am doing a jacket pipe system in which the outer pipe is welded to flange. How should I make that type of connection?

Thank you in advance.

Hello,

this is a little bit complicated and depends on what your intention is. For the pipe stress analysis it is sufficient to model this as a "full coupling".
In case you want to do a flange analysis, there are two options:
  • Do a finite element calculation using e.g. ANSYS
  • Make assumptions and create a simplified model
For a simplified model you can still model it with a full coupling for the pipe stress analysis. In the flange analysis you define the geometry of the inner flange and consider the additional force caused by the bending moment from the different thermal expansion of the both pipes (temperature difference).

However, you can't consider the higher stiffness of the flange, nor the local stresses which might occur.

Kind regards
