Hey

Can anybody share major differences between ASME B31.3 and EN 13480 in terms of piping stress analysis?

Thank you in advance!

Best regards,
Ioana

Hi

This is a vast subject.
If you focalize only on the longitudinal stresses some of the differences are:
  • EN 13480-3 has stress intensification factors SIFs ii and io as in ASME B31.3 but also simple SIFs as in ASME B31.1
  • tratement of axial stresses due to pressure and loads is different
  • In the creep range EN13480-3 has a specific equation for creep
  • EN13480-3 has a special equation for settlement
  • the occasional loads k-factors (increase of allowable stress compared to sustained loads) is basically 1.3 in ASME B31.3 but depends on the type of occasional load in EN 13480-3
  • The calculation of allowable stresses is completely different (due to the different approach in ASME and EN codes regarding materials)
    ...
Of course this table is not complete.

Best regards
